Kelpinor and Ocean Access deploys environmental monitoring sensor buoy
Kelpinor, in collaboration with Ocean Access, has successfully deployed a pilot sensor buoy at the Vedskjæran seaweed farm location. This deployment marks an important milestone in online environmental monitoring, which is essential for the health of local ecosystems and the optimal growth of seaweed.
The sensor buoy is equipped to measure several key environmental parameters:
- Temperature: Essential for determining the best conditions for seaweed growth.
- Chlorophyll: Indicates the level of photosynthetic activity in the surrounding water.
- Turbidity: Helps monitor water clarity, which is vital for light penetration.
- Conductivity: Measures salinity levels that significantly affect seaweed development.
This early phase of data collection aids in the establishing of baseline environmental conditions, and has the potential to lay the technical foundation for the gathering of longitudinal data, spanning multiple years and locations. This data may become important in developing robust models for predicting seaweed growth dynamics, optimizing harvest cycles, and preemptively addressing challenges like biofouling.
We are excited to delve into the data and will continue to share insights and developments in collaboration with our project partners Ocean Access and SINTEF Ocean!
